The overall Which? test score is made up of the following star ratings, all determined by our rigorous lab tests.
How we test support for child
We check how supportive it is for the child. This includes support for the head, back and spine, and the position your child’s pelvis is held in.
How we test support for adult
We check how well each baby sling or carrier fits the wearer, based on a range of body sizes for both men and women, how easy the adjustments are to get a good fit, weight distribution, padding and lumbar support.
How we test ease of use
We look at how easy the carrier’s instructions are to understand, including clarity and accuracy. We check how easy it is to get the sling or carrier on or off, when wearing both on your front and on your back.
How we test baby feels safe
How safe does the baby feel while putting them in the sling and adjusting it, and then also removing your baby from the sling.
How we test durability and safety
Our experts look at how easily buckles and straps may break or come loose through constant use. We test this by using a 15kg test dummy and jolting it up and down to replicate movement by the baby and parent. They also examine the carrier to see if it has choking hazards and trailing cords that could pose a risk. Leg openings are checked to make sure they’re not so big that your baby could fall through them.
