How we test picture quality

Combined score of several picture quality tests. To assess DVD quality our experts watch the same DVD clips from a BBC documentary and Hollywood blockbuster, This tests the player's ability to upscale standard definition (SD) content, such as a DVD, for display on a high definition (HD) TV. To test the HD picture, our experts watch clips from Blu-ray discs, and if the player is 3D-capable, we watch those same clips using the 3D Blu-ray version. For models capable of 4K upscaling, we assess the picture when those same clips are upscaled from Blu-ray (HD) to four times the resolution on a 4K (Ultra HD) TV. For models capable of playing 4K Ultra HD discs, we test picture quality for this too. For smart-capable models, internet video from BBC iPlayer is used.

How we test sound quality

This includes the results of our technical tests and our independent listening panel's verdict. The volume is set to an acceptable level and we note the level of any noise made by the player while in use and the likelihood that it could be distracting.

We press every button on the remote control and browse every menu from set up to give you a verdict. We check any advanced features, such as playing files from an external USB drive and connecting it to your home broadband network and using smart TV apps, so you know what to expect when you buy it.

How we test power consumption

We measure how much power each player uses both while playing a disc and in standby, so you can select a model that won't silently add much to your household bills even when you're not watching your favourite films.
