Sky broadband review

Our Sky broadband customer satisfaction survey reveals how people rated their home Sky broadband service for installation, speed, reliability and customer support
Yvette FletcherPrincipal researcher & writer

Sky is one of the biggest home broadband providers in the UK, and offers a wide range of packages – but it hasn't always been rated highly by UK customers in the Which? satisfaction survey. Our latest customer rating reveals how Sky broadband customers rated their Sky broadband service.

Each year, we survey thousands of UK broadband customers to check how they rate each big provider's speed, reliability, customer service and value for money. Read on for our review, or use the free broadband comparison service from Which? to find the best Sky broadband deal for you.

What Sky customers told us

Our research showed that Sky broadband customers had lukewarm reviews of the service they received.

  • 'For the amount I pay each month, I don’t think I should be experiencing connection drop-outs as frequently as I do.'
  • 'I haven’t really had any issues with Sky apart from the occasional connection drop-out. My main issue is I think I should get the package cheaper.'

Sky broadband deals

Sky is best known for its combined TV, broadband and phone deals but it also offers several options for those who don't want to subscribe to its pay-TV service. These broadband deals also include a landline phone service, though changes to landline phone services in the UK mean it now offers some phone services via its broadband service.

All contracts now last 18 months. Sky's packages aren't restricted by a fair-usage policy or any traffic management. Plus, you'll be able to stay online when you're out and about, thanks to free and unlimited public wi-fi access at hotspots via the Sky WiFi app.

If you want a package that includes a pay-TV service, read our Sky TV and broadband provider review.

Sky broadband speeds

Sky has six fibre broadband packages, which include landline rental.

Its widely available 'Superfast' packages have an average speed of 36Mbps or 61Mbps, while the 'Full Fibre 100' deal has an average speed of 100Mbps.

Speedier broadband is also available in some areas: the 'Ultrafast' package has an average speed of 145Mbps; 'Ultrafast Plus' has an average speed of 500Mbps; and 'Gigafast' has an average speed of 900Mbps.

Customers who don't yet have access to fibre technology can still get its standard broadband package, even though it's no longer advertised on its website: 'Sky Broadband Essential Plus' delivers an average speed of 11Mbps.

To compare prices and see more details on each package, read our Sky broadband package reviews.

Does Sky put up broadband prices every year?

No – Sky has avoided putting clauses covering mid-contract price rises in broadband contracts. However, it does regularly change its prices (usually in February of each year). If you're affected, you'll receive a notification letting you know that you can switch away without penalty if you choose not to accept the price rise.

What are Sky Broadband Boost and Sky Wi-fi Max?

Sky Broadband Boost is an add-on to a Sky subscription that brings extra benefits. For £5 per month, you get:

  • A 'wi-fi guarantee' of 3Mbps minimum speeds in every room in your house
  • No-cost engineer visits
  • Daily speed checks and notifications of issues
  • An extra 2GB of mobile data if you have broadband issues

For more information, read our guide to Sky Broadband Boost.

Wi-fi Max is Sky's new wi-fi guarantee add-on, although it's not available to all broadband customers. For £6.50 per month, you also get:

  • an upgraded router with Wi-Fi 6 technology – the Sky Max Hub
  • Up to three booster devices to help improve the signal across your house
  • A 'wi-fi guarantee' in every room of 10 Mbps or 25 Mbps, depending on your package

Both Sky Broadband Boost and Sky Wi-fi Max have an 18-month minimum term and can't be cancelled without incurring penalty charges, so it's worth carefully weighing up whether you'll make the most of these perks for the monthly cost.

What is Sky Broadband Shield?

Sky Broadband Shield is provided to Sky customers at no extra cost, and includes tools to make it safer to browse online. These include:

  • Protection against websites that may contain malware or phishing attacks
  • Explicit content filters to safeguard the whole family
  • Support across multiple devices

While Broadband Shield may provide some helpful benefits, it's not a replacement for dedicated antivirus software

What is the latest Sky router?

New fibre broadband customers receive a Sky Hub 4. Our lab tests found it was simple to use but might not be suitable for busier households. Find out more in our review of the Sky Hub 4.

New standard broadband customers get the Sky Q Hub router. When our experts took a look, they found the Sky Q Hub did the basics well but was lacking in some areas.
