Britax Römer has decided to conduct a voluntary recall of all BABY-SAFE 5Z and certain BABY-SAFE 5Z2 car seats produced before October 21st, 2023 (other models are not affected by this recall). There is a potential safety issue with a gap that can form between the handle and seat-shell of these infant carriers, usually only on one side.
The gap does not impact the performance of the car seat in the vehicle or in a crash, however there is a potential safety risk when carrying the infant carrier outside of a vehicle. In rare cases the handle can detach unexpectedly causing sudden movements of the shell and/or surprise of the person carrying the infant carrier. This may lead to the BABY-SAFE 5Z/BABY-SAFE 5Z2 falling down or colliding with other items and in unfortunate circumstances to an injury of the infant like scratches or bruises.
What should you do
If you have a BABY-SAFE 5Z or BABY-SAFE 5Z2, please check on its website (details below) if your product is affected by this issue (certain BABY-SAFE 5Z2 are not affected). If your product is part of the recall, please stop using the infant carrier immediately. If you need to use your infant carrier, please only use it in the car and do not carry the infant carrier using the handle.
All affected BABY-SAFE 5Z and BABY-SAFE 5Z2 will be replaced free-of-charge for you with a new safe version of the product, the BABY-SAFE PRO or an equivalent product.
For questions or concerns, please contact us at hello@britax.com. Britax Romer apologises for any inconvenience that this may cause. The company takes the safety of its products extremely seriously and if it sees any potential issues, it is their responsibility to act swiftly.

The overall Which? test score is made up of the following star ratings, all determined by our rigorous lab tests.
The overall safety score is made up of the results of crash testing (front crash; side crash) seat design, stability in the car and belt routing. Our crash tests go beyond the legal minimum requirements for UK car seat regulations and are conducted at higher speeds and forces than the regulations require. We feel our tests more accurately reflect what could happen in a real life crash.

How we test fitting in car
Fitting and using includes: How easy it is to install the seat correctly in the car. How easy it is to strap a child securely into the seat. How well the seat is designed in order to prevent incorrect use. How easy the seat cover is to remove and wash. How little space the seat takes up in the car and how comfortable your child is in the seat.

How we test ergonomics
Our experts conduct an ergonomic assessment of each seat to make sure your child will be in the best position when travelling, along with the level of padding and support. Our tests also reveal how much space this car seat takes up in the back seat of a car and how easy it is to get your child in and out of the seat. Plus, our eagle-eyed car seat experts will check whether this seat affects how much space any front passengers have. This assessment was introduced to our site in May 2015. If a seat does not have this score, it was tested before May 2015.
