Launched towards the end of 2017, Outfox the Market is a family-owned company based in Leicester in the East Midlands.

The company claims to 'pride ourselves on being able to offer that authentic touch to our service that many larger companies can no longer do'.

Outfox the Market sells 100% renewable electricity, although it doesn't generate renewable energy itself.

Customers can use its free app to submit meter readings, check their balance or make payments. The company asks that all our customers manage their account online, but customers who do not have access to the internet or cannot manage their account via the website or app can request paper billing.

Outfox the Market customer review

After missing out recently, we've been able to rank Outfox the Market in our energy suppliers table again this year, as we received feedback from enough customers.

Outfox the Market came joint 4th out of 16 energy companies, as rated by 9,025 members of the public in the annual Which? customer survey. Its customer score of 69% was the same Sainsbury's Energy and Utility Warehouse.

Although we did not award star ratings for all aspects, due to limited customer responses, customers rated it highly for communicating about energy costs, and gave a decent three stars for value for money - no supplier achieved more than three stars for this.

One satisfied customer said: 'They regularly contact me when a change is happening so I know well in advance before it happens'. Another added: 'Not had any real problems, they have reduced direct debits when asked and paid back money reasonably quickly when had too much in credit with them'.

Which? verdict on Outfox the Market

  • Pros: Scored well in our customer service analysis; customers appreciate its communications about energy costs
  • Cons: Could do better at meeting its smart meter targets

Our Outfox the Market supplier assessment

In October 2023 we looked at four aspects of suppliers' business practices and procedures:

  • customer service - including how and when you can get in touch, and the quality of self-service help online
  • how well they deal with complaints - how many complaints suppliers get and how quickly they resolve them
  • supporting customers who need it - including web accessibility, those in vulnerable situations, in financial difficulty, who use prepayment meters,  and those who need materials in languages besides English
  • smart meter targets performance in 2022 (the most recent).

We did this using a combination of the responses to a survey we sent to suppliers and our own assessments.

Outfox the Market scored 12 points out of 15 for customer service in our analysis, only bettered by Shell Energy with 14 points. It also achieved a creditable seven out of 10 for complaints.

It was somewhat let down by an underwhelming six out of 10 points for supporting customers who need it, putting it in the lower half of the table on that measure. It could do better on installing smart meters, too.
