Best food and drink - discover top-rated supermarket picks from our independent taste tests

Is it worth getting a veg box?

Fruit and veg box customers told us they like them because it means they shop less at supermarkets. Many also liked that you get sent things you wouldn't necessarily choose, which encourages you to be more adventurous and eat a wider range of fruit and veg.

There's usually some flexibility, too: you'll find out in advance what your weekly box will contain and can switch out a specified number of items. You can also pause deliveries if you're on holiday or want a break – some companies will let you amend or cancel a delivery the day before it arrives, although others require four days' notice.

Are fruit and veg boxes good value vs the supermarket?

shopping supermarket basket

We compared the cost of buying a fruit and veg box from two of the largest companies – Riverford and Oddbox – against buying the equivalent produce at a supermarket.

We found that veg boxes typically come out more expensive, but there's not a great deal in it – less than £5 in both cases. And, of course, one is delivered straight to your door, while the other requires you to go to the supermarket.

Riverford costs vs the supermarket

  • Small weekly box from Riverford - £17.05 including delivery
  • Same items price-checked at Waitrose (chosen because it had the most comparable organic produce) - £15.69

Riverford Box = £1.36 more expensive

Oddbox costs vs the supermarket

  • A small weekly mixed box from Oddbox - £14.49 plus a £1.49 delivery charge, totalling £15.98
  • Same produce at Tesco cost £12.14

Oddbox = £3.84 more expensive

Based on boxes ordered in August 2023. When an exact match wasn't available in supermarkets, we chose the nearest equivalent.

Veg box customers in our survey weren't put off by the fact that the boxes cost slightly more. One user told us: 'We're happy to pay that bit extra as it's a sustainable, innovative brand and that's important to us. There's no plastic packaging.'

Several people told us they like that the boxes offer an alternative to shopping at the supermarkets, the food is seasonal and you get things you wouldn't usually buy, which encourages you to be more creative with your cooking.

How to choose the best fruit and veg box for you

A fruit and veg box being delivered
  • Check if the company delivers to your area - some will only deliver in your area on certain days, or not at all.
  • Decide if you want organic produce only - this will rule out some of the companies.
  • Think about how regularly you want delivery - do you want a regular box or to order ad-hoc ones? Flexibility varies.
  • Consider whether you want extras beyond fruit and veg - some companies offer a wider range of extras.

Some companies offer lots of top-up options such as meat, cheese and cleaning products, so you can pretty much use it as a full supermarket, whereas others have a more limited offering.

The big players, such as Abel & Cole, Oddbox and Riverford are subscription companies where you sign up to a regular weekly box (which you can pause if you're away). Other companies including Milk & More allow you to place on-off orders.

Consider your lifestyle and if you're happy to go with the flow to some extent. If you have a fussy eater in your household or don't like certain foods, then a fruit and veg box might not be for you.

If you're keen to try, you can look out for introductory offers and give one a go.

How we tested fruit and veg boxes

We surveyed 1,231 people (general public and Which? members) in May 2023 about their fruit and veg box subscriptions.

We asked them to rate the company and its boxes on aspects including customer service, value for money, range and quality of food, quantity of produce in the box, ease of ordering, the amount of packaging used and the delivery service. Customers were also asked to rate the seasonality of boxes.

The customer score is based on satisfaction and likelihood to recommend the company to others.

To give a company a rating, we needed a minimum of 30 responses in our survey.
