How to buy the best integrated fridge freezer

In two minds about whether or not you want an integrated fridge freezer? These questions will help you decide if an integrated model is right for you.

  • Will you want to change your kitchen design in future? If there's a chance that you might change your layout, opt for a freestanding model. Find out more about kitchen planning.
  • How much are you willing to spend? Integrated fridge freezers tend to be more expensive. You'll have fewer good, cheap models to pick from than if you were buying a freestanding model.
  • Are you prepared for potentially higher energy costs? We don't have any Eco Buy integrated models at present.
  • Is a large capacity a priority for you? Integrated models tend to have less storage space inside than freestanding models. Ten shopping bags of groceries is the most that any integrated model we've tested can hold, while freestanding ones can hold up to 23 bags.

We've sifted through all the current deals on fridge freezers for this month so that you don't have to. Discover the best fridge freezer deals.

Integrated vs freestanding fridge freezers

Kitchen with integrated appliances

As we've said, one of the most important differences between integrated and freestanding fridge freezers is that integrated models almost always contain less storage space.

At the time of writing, the built-in models we’ve tested contain around 182 litres of usable space – enough for around nine supermarket carrier bags' worth of fresh and frozen food. By comparison, the average freestanding fridge freezer contains 236 litres (around 12 carrier bags) of usable space.

Integrated fridge freezers can cost more to run, too.

There are also fewer models to choose between, compared with freestanding fridge freezers, and far fewer really impressive models.

What size integrated fridge freezer should I buy?

You can buy models with various fridge-to-freezer ratios, so make sure you pick a size that will suit your fresh and frozen food needs. Most are similar in size to freestanding models – where the fridge is slightly larger than the freezer – but some have a large fridge and a relatively small freezer.

If you’re replacing an existing integrated fridge freezer, you’ll have to choose one with the same fridge-to-freezer proportions as your old one.

Integrated fridge freezer dimensions

Built-in models are designed to fit inside a standard 60cm-wide kitchen cupboard unit. They’re a standard depth and are typically 178cm tall – but do check, as some are a few centimetres taller.

How much do integrated fridge freezers cost?

Modern kitchen

Integrated fridge freezers cost from around £250 to upwards of £2,000.

Cheaper brands (that make appliances for £500 and under) include Beko, Candy, Fridgemaster, GoodHome, Hoover, Hotpoint, Indesit, Kenwood and Logik.

Increasing your budget to £800 means you'll also be able to pick from a fair number of Bosch, Haier, Neff, Samsung and Siemens models too.

Liebherr, Miele, Neff and John Lewis make models at the premium end of the spectrum. The most expensive integrated models we've reviewed cost over £1,700.

Why are integrated fridge freezers so expensive?

Like-for-like, integrated fridge freezers are more expensive than their freestanding counterparts. The market for integrated fridge freezers is more limited, so you've got less scope to shop around to choose one that's the right size, suitable for your needs and also within your budget.

And, once you've made the decision to incorporate a built-in fridge freezer into your kitchen design, any future replacement fridge freezers will also need to be integrated models. So there's less incentive for manufacturers to make models appealingly cheap, because you're already tied in to buying another integrated model.

The best integrated fridge freezers cool fast, locking nutrients into your food. At the other end of the scale, the worst ones struggle to cool and can't keep food safely chilled and frozen when your kitchen heats up and cools down.
