The overall Which? test score is made up of the following star ratings, all determined by our rigorous lab tests.
How we test comfort of the child
This considers factors such as how easy it is to put the child into the seat, adjusting and fastening the harness and the general perceived comfort of the child.
How we test high chair features
Assesses the range of features available on each high chair including: adjustable and removable tray with removable insert; seat height and recline adjustment; adjustable footrest; removable, machine-washable and padded covers, converting to a childs chair and folding for storage.
How we test ease of feeding
How easy it is for parents to feed their child in this high chair.
How we test assembly
Includes assessment of the quality of the instructions and how easy it was and how long it took our lab experts to assemble each high chair straight out of the box. For booster and seat harnesses this is just how easy it is to set the chair or harness up to use it.
How we test cleaning
How easy it is to clean the high chair covering the seat itself, covers tray and harness, including an assessment of how easily components are stained by food.
How we test high chair safety
Using a test dummy to simulate a child, we test the forward, rearward and sideways stability of the high chair, to check that it won't topple over and also assess the risk of potential finger traps.
How we test stability
This rating is awarded by parent testers and is their perceived accessment of how stable the high chair is. It is not the result of the safety assessment conducted by our laboratory which did not reveal any problems to cause concern. It is a consensus opinion, not a guarantee that the product is safe or not safe.
Parents considered aspects such as how well their child was enclosed and held in the seat, whether they could lever themselves to stand up or slide about, if they could wriggle out of parts of the harness, or trap fingers or other parts of their body in the mechanisms.
A 3-star rating indicates that the perceived safety of the high chair is acceptable. 4-stars indicate that is the product is perceived to have good stability. A 5-star rating means that parents perceived and would have described the stability of the high chair as very good/excellent/the best/far above average.
