Using a pressure washer to clean your patio and paths will make them look much better and stop them becoming dangerously slippery to walk on.
A pressure washer is far quicker, easier and more effective than using a scrubbing brush and hose, but only if you know how to get the job done properly. You'll also need to make sure you're using the right washer - too powerful and you'll damage the surface, too weak and the grime won't budge.

If you’re happy to use chemicals, there are path weed killers available that, as well as killing the existing weeds in your patio cracks, will prevent others from coming up for several months afterwards.
Alternatively, if you prefer to avoid them because of their environmental impact, then you may prefer to remove them by hand. Long-handled wire brushes make the job of removing weeds from between the narrow gaps less backbreaking.
Make sure you keep the mortar between the slabs in good shape and replace any that gets removed over time as this will reduce the space available for weeds to grow.

Some expensive pressure washers can use water from a water butt (or rain tank), but most are only designed to use mains water.
Karcher sells a special suction hose with a filter as an optional extra for many of its models. Costing about £34, this filter enables the washer to use water from a rain tank.
