How to get cheap prints

Printed photos at home

If you're ordering a lot of prints, check whether the online printing service you're considering is offering lower prices on bulk orders.

Photo printing websites may also offer introductory deals and discount codes, so before using your regular website, be sure to do a search to see if any competitors can save you any money on your order.

You can forgo the faff of popping to the shops or waiting for the post by printing pictures yourself. But you need to think carefully about ink costs.

Based on our extensive lab tests, we know that on average ink tank printers work out far cheaper to run. For example, the average cost of one 10x8in photo, not including the cost of the photo paper, is:

  • 95p cheapest single print from an online photo printing website (Asda)
  • 72p cartridge inkjet printer
  • 5p ink tank printer

Free photo prints: what's the catch?

Hanging up printed photos

A lot of providers, including Freeprints, Snapfish and Photobox, offer free printing services where you can get a set number of printed photos (eg 50 free prints a year) and pay only delivery costs.

Usually, these offers help established names stay relevant against new competition and to entice newcomers who may become regular customers in the future. Do watch out for usage limits, though.

Upselling is also very common in this space, with companies recuperating costs by selling customers higher-ticket items – such as calendars and photo books.

Photobooks and photo gifts

Photobook

Many of the photo printing websites offer ways to incorporate your photos into gifts, rather than the standard photo frame.

Photobooks have replaced the traditional album for those who want a more personal feel. You can sometimes add borders and backgrounds to make your photobook feel more like a scrapbook. Some printers allow you to add text if you want to share a message or favourite memory. Photobooks can vary in quality, size, and price, and can be hardback or paperback.

We've tested seven online services offering photobooks, from popular brands such as Google Photos, Photobox and Vistaprint. Go to the best photo album books to see which ones impressed us the most.

Other photo gifts you may wish to consider include calendars, cushions, towels and even snow globes. It's worth checking a few photo printing websites to see what they have available.
