How we test overall sound quality

We rate sound quality using a professional panel of five expert listeners with a range of ages and musical tastes. They listen to nine recordings for each radio, which cover a wide range of music and radio genres, giving a rating per recording and an overall verdict (not an average).

How we test energy efficiency

Our lab professionals measure power use when the radio is on, in standby and using batteries where applicable, and we use this to calculate an overall rating for the radio.

How we test ease of use

Our lab professionals assess a range of factors including how simple the radio is to set up, how easy it is to find stations and get a good signal. They also assess how suitable it would be to use as a bedside alarm clock radio, which takes into account the display clarity and brightness, so with the best models you won't be kept awake by the glare from your radio.
