When set the task of detecting smoke from fires fuelled by wood, plastics, cotton and solvents, this unbranded and unreliable product failed to sound seven fire scenarios. It’s one of the most unresponsive and potentially dangerous alarms we’ve seen and in our tests, we found it unable to reliably detect smoke and that’s why we’ve made it a Don’t Buy.

This is a dangerously unresponsive smoke alarm and we urge you to not buy it. It’s listed with the brand name Digoo on eBay, it was bought from a seller based in China and it failed to sound in a terrifying seven out of eight of our smoke-detection tests. In your home the consequences of such poor smoke detection don’t bear thinking about. So, don’t be tempted by the low price you might see this alarm being listed for on online marketplaces such as eBay, AliExpress and Wish – it doesn’t detect smoke reliably and that’s why we’ve made it a Don’t Buy.

Sound output is based on decibel levels, measured in a fully soundproofed chamber. Three stars or above are louder than 85dB – the equivalent of a lawn mower. Ones rated two stars or below should probably be avoided by those with poor hearing. This test isn't carried out for heat alarms, which are tested to a different programme. Only applicable to smoke alarms.
