How we test soup makers
We select bestselling soup makers sold at UK retailers and test them to see how quickly and easily they make an appetising smooth and chunky soup.
Cooking quality
We use the soup makers to whip up a smooth butternut squash, and chunky chicken and vegetable soup. We assess both soups on the following:
- Quality We check that our smooth soups are lump-free. We also check that the ingredients in our chunky soup are cooked through, without turning to mush.
- Cooking time We time how long each soup maker takes to make our two recipes.
- Temperature We record the temperature of our soup to check it's as close to 75°C as possible. Soup that's too tepid or too hot gets marked down.
Ease of use
- We check if the instructions were clearly laid out and easy to understand.
- We move onto setting up the soup maker, checking that the lid, attachments and any accessories are easy to fit.
- When soup making is underway, we check if all controls are clearly labelled and well-positioned, and that cooking indicators make sense.
Cleaning
- We judge how easy each soup maker is to clean, both inside and out.
- For soup makers with a self-clean function, we try it out to see how effective it is.
Energy efficiency
We plug in an energy-use monitor while each soup maker is running. We use this to check energy use when making smooth and chunky soups.
Noise
We listen out for the soup makers that are almost silent or that make loud blending noises during cooking.
Soup maker recipes and cooking tips
Whizz up a homemade mushroom soup in a soup maker or carrot and coriander, leek and potato or tomato. Browse BBC Good Food's soup maker recipes for inspiration.
If you prefer to create your own soup recipe, here's what we've learnt:
- Chop ingredients evenly Smaller chunks will help your soup to cook more quickly and evenly.
- Add water first This can help prevent food sticking to the bottom and burning during cooking.
- Try adding veg high in vitamin B and C at the end These vitamins are heat-sensitive, so can be lost if you cook vegetables that contain these (such as peppers, broccoli, spinach or peas) for too long. Some soup makers have a pause button that can help with this, but these are more common on soup-making blenders.
- Use lentils to thicken up your soup These are cheap, and an excellent source of protein and fibre.
- Use a little oil Sautéing onions or garlic in oil at the beginning doesn’t add a lot of fat to your soup, but can help pack in more flavour. Some soup makers have a sauté setting to help with this.
Can you put raw meat in a soup maker?
Check the instructions before you attempt this. Most soup makers don't reach a high-enough temperature for an extended period to cook meat thoroughly.
The Ninja Foodi Blender and Soup Maker is one of the few soup makers that allow you to add raw meat safely.
One way to incorporate meat into your soup recipes is to use leftover cooked meat from other meals, such as roasts.
Is it worth buying a soup maker?
If you often make soup, it could be worth buying a soup maker, as they are cheap to run.
For example, if you were to make soup once a week using a soup maker, under the energy price cap from 1 April 2024 (24.5p per kWh), it would cost between £1.56 and £5.72 of electricity a year to run.
We reveal how much your appliances cost to run including dishwashers, tumble dryers and fridge freezers.
