The key responsibility of a safety gate is to prevent a toddler or young child from going somewhere they shouldn’t. In most cases, it’s to stop a toddler going up or down a flight of stairs that they could, if not monitored, fall down.

The sample of this stair gate that we tested failed a key safety test that checks whether a gate is strong enough to withstand repeated pushing and pulling over time. The safety standard states it should stay in place through 10,000 cycles, but this gate became dislodged after 3,700 cycles when the adhesive pads that hold the wall cups for the pressure fittings in place loosened and came unstuck.

This could mean a child’s safety is at risk, which is why we’ve made it a Don’t Buy.

Safetots has disputed our findings. It told us that the gate has been exhaustively tested in China and the UK, and has successfully satisfied the selected requirements of BS EN 1930:2011. This is the same standard that Which? tests to.
