Ultrasun's Body Mineral Sunscreen SPF30 sun cream failed to provide the sun protection required in our tests. In terms of SPF protection, it failed twice, on both occasions registering around half of the SPF30 claimed. We also measured for UVA protection and again, this was found to be lacking. Based on its SPF and UVA test failures, we have made it a Don’t Buy.

Ultrasun told us: ‘We conclusively support the results of our independent tests, which found the Ultrasun 30SPF Mineral Body reached a UVB-SPF in vivo of 30.76 and a UVA-PF in vitro of 14.3, which equates to a 93% UVA absorbance.’

Ultrasun’s Body Mineral Sunscreen SPF30 uses titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to filter the sun’s UV rays. It’s certified as 100% natural, with Ultrasun stating that it’s water-resistant, hypoallergenic, sensitive and vegan-friendly. It’s also pricey – a small 100ml tube costs £28. However, in our tests, we found that it failed to provide the claimed SPF30 and it was lacking in UVA protection. Because of this, we have made it a Don’t Buy.

UVA Protection

Whether the sun cream passed or failed our UVA protection test which checks whether the product meets the EU recommendation. Products with five stars passed our test, so meet the EU recommendation. Products with one star failed our test, so we recommend you avoid them.

Application

How we test application

We asked a user panel to test how each sunscreen looks, feels and smells once applied. The star rating is an average rating from all panellists. Products that earned five stars in our application test are eligible to be Best Buys as long as they met their label claim in the SPF test and the EU recommendation for UVA protection.
