Best and worst solo holiday providers in 2024

Our survey of more than 8,000 holidaymakers reveals the best holiday companies that don't rip-off solo travellers with sky high supplements
Guy HobbsPrincipal researcher & writer

Solo travellers often get a raw deal, paying as much as 87% per person more than a couple for a less luxurious room according to our price research. But the best provider in our survey keeps single supplements down, and even offers a discount if you're travelling alone.

You might be surprised to see Jet2Holidays at the top of the table below, but when we asked those who travelled alone to rate their holiday we found that while some solo travellers prefer a specialist provider of escorted group tours, many others prefer sipping a poolside cocktail in the company of a good book, with no-one to hurry them along.

That's why our survey of thousands of solo holidaymakers lets you compare both mainstream holiday providers as well as solo specialists.

You can compare customer scores and prices in the table below and, for extra peace of mind, those companies awarded Which? Recommended Provider (WRP) status guarantee they won't add surcharges in 2024 – so the price won't go up after you book.

Using the table: In August 2022, we asked 8,361 Which? Connect panel members and the public to complete an online survey about their experiences of booking and going on holiday in the past two years. Star ratings are based on one to five stars. The more stars the better. Sample sizes are in brackets next to each holiday company. n/a indicates we did not receive enough responses to report on a company in that category. Average price: Based on the median price per day of holidays taken by survey respondents, within this category, with
the company named. Short-haul destinations are defined as anywhere less than a five-hour flight from London. Customer score: Based on a combination of overall satisfaction
and how likely people are to recommend the company.

Why Jet2holidays is the best provider for solo travellers

Jet2holidays has gone from strength to strength and, despite growing to be one of the UK’s biggest package tour operators, it has managed to maintain the personal touch.

It provides beach/resort packages for solo travellers, with single occupancy rooms, adult-focused hotels and a £30 solo traveller discount (use the code Solo30).

It was praised for the value for money its holidays provided, as well as how well organised they were from start to finish.

Which? verdict: For a very decent price, Jet2holidays offers a solo holiday for sunseekers with excellent customer service.

What about walking, art and activity holidays for single travellers?

If you're more interested in escorted tours, where you join a group of fellow travellers and tour guide to explore a destination or to paint, go rock climbing or undertake any number of specialist activities see our reviews of the best escorted tour providers. Many of these companies have no single supplement, as they are group based.

Which? Recommended Provider HF Holidays, for example, offers everything from cooking lessons in Sicily to learning how to play bridge in Shropshire.  While Exodus specialises in adventure group travel, and is one of the few companies to estimate the CO2 emissions from its holidays, to help you make a more sustainable choice.

How we researched holiday companies

In August 2022, we asked 8,361 Which? Connect panel members and the public to complete an online survey about their experiences of booking and going on holiday in the past two years. We reported on companies only when we received at least 30 responses about them.
