We like: Efficient water usage

This LG washing machine's large 11kg capacity makes it especially well-suited to larger households. The list of advanced features is pretty extensive, such as LG’s ezDispense technology that holds up to 35 doses of detergent and releases the appropriate amount with each wash. There’s also an Allergy Care cycle that’s aimed at reducing dust mite allergens and an automatic sensor in the machine that will run the optimal wash pattern based on the weight and softness of your clothes.

Hotpoint NSWM743UWUKN

We like: Decent rinse 

We don't like: Lengthy programs 

This small-to-medium-sized 7kg-capacity washing machine has a fast 1,400rpm spin cycle. There are 16 programs, such as cottons and synthetics, eco 40-60, delicates and faster washes – including a 30-minute wash, and one that takes on a full load in 45 minutes. There's also a hygiene option, which blasts steam into the drum at the end of the cycle.

We like: Superb cotton and synthetics wash

We don't like: Slow programs

This is a reasonably priced washing machine with an 8kg-capacity drum. Among the 14 programs listed around the dial is a 15-minute quick wash, a drum-clean option to keep the drum fresh, an energy-saving eco program, and steam setting that can help to kill off bacteria – useful for those with allergies.

The digital display shows the time remaining until the program ends, and allows you to delay your wash by up to 24 hours.

We like: Brilliant spin cycle

We don't like: High water use

This freestanding washing machine uses Samsung's Ecobubble technology, which means it pre-mixes detergent, air and water to make a cleaning foam. Samsung claims this foam can remove stains at lower temperatures, potentially cutting your energy costs.

Zanussi ZWF942E3PW

We like: Good washing performance

We don't like: Slightly higher running costs than some

This is a good-sized machine with a 9kg capacity for cottons and 4kg capacity for synthetics. It has 14 programs including eco 40-60, a 14-minute refresh and a 30-minute rapid wash, as well as cotton and synthetic washes. Its maximum spin speed is 1400rpm and there is a time remaining display, delay start and a child lock. There is also an easy iron feature to help prevent creases.

This 10kg-capacity washing machine has enough space for a large household's washing, and it has 14 programs ranging from your standard cotton and eco washes to special high-speed washes as short as 14 minutes. It doesn't have smart connectivity but does have some neat features like a delayed start, a child lock and a time-remaining display.

We like: Easy to use, low running cost

We don't like: Slow programs, weak rinse

This medium-sized washing machine has an 8kg washing capacity for cottons and 4kg for synthetics. 

There are 22 programs, including all the usual ones. But notable extras include a steam wash, bubble-soak prewash, 15-minute quick program, and special settings for different fabrics such as woollens, sportswear, towels or denims. This is also a smart appliance with wi-fi, so you can operate it from a distance using the SmartThings app on your smartphone or tablet. 

It's notably cheap to run, too.

We like: Quick for its size

We don't like: Doesn't have the best rinse

This freestanding washing machine has a huge 12kg cottons capacity. 

There’s a large range of programs to choose from, plus a steam function that can be used at the end of the wash cycle which, the manufacturer claims, will kill 99.9% of bacteria. It uses sensors to weigh the load and adjust washing times accordingly, potentially saving you water and energy.

Because of its capacity, it would probably best suit a large household, or one where there's a lot of laundry to get through each week.

This stylish-looking freestanding washing machine can hold up to 9kg of cottons, making it a great choice for a busier household, plus it comes with a whopping five-year guarantee. AEG claims the sensors in the drum will adapt the washing cycle to best suit your load, and you can take advantage of the auto-dosing technology to measure your detergent too.

Washing machine deals from £800 to £1,000

Miele WED164

• Freestanding
• 9kg cottons capacity
• White

We like: Impressive smart connectivity 

We don't like: Relatively expensive 

This large-capacity machine offers plenty of features, including a time-remaining display and delay start, plus a total of 12 programs, including ones focusing on outerwear, minimum iron, and dark garments or denim. This model includes an inverter motor, which Miele claims ensures a wear-free, quiet and energy-saving operation. There's also a child lock to keep inquisitive kids from interrupting the wash.

It has smart connectivity via the Miele@home app, which lets you control the machine with your smartphone or voice-activated smart speaker.

How to spot a good deal on a washing machine

Rebecca Jakeman, Which? washing machines expert says: More often than not, paying more for a washing machine doesn't guarantee you exceptional cleaning performance. In fact, models with higher price tags tend to offer extra features instead, such as 'smart' capabilities and more washing programs – so there's no need to pay above the odds if you don't want to.

Where is the best place to buy a washing machine?

To find the best shops for home appliances, tech and more, we surveyed 4,249 members of the Which? Connect panel and 8,003 members of the general public in September 2022. 

We asked how satisfied people were with the retailer and combined their responses to give star ratings for customer service, value for money, and delivery and returns for all the major retailers, including AO, Currys and John Lewis & Partners.

How much do you need to pay for a washing machine?

Some washing machines are available for less than £300, while others stretch well over the £1,000 mark.

Which? testing shows you’re more likely to end up with a dud Don’t Buy than a Best Buy if you spend less than £300.

While it's true that the more you spend, the more choice of Best Buys you get, the good news is there are hidden gems to be found. The cheapest Best Buys are just over £400.

You usually have to pay more than £600 to get a Best Buy. With this budget you can choose between a variety of Best Buys, ranging from big to small, freestanding and integrated.

But be careful. The most expensive Don’t Buy we’ve found in our tests is nearly £580 – an expensive mistake to make.

What extra washing machine costs should you consider?

1. Installation and delivery costs

Some retailers charge significantly more than others for delivery.

Some give you no choice over the date or time of the delivery (so you'll need to make sure you're at home that day).

AO charges the most we've seen for a quick delivery and a time slot of your choice – either morning (7am-12pm), lunch (10am-2pm) or afternoon (12-5pm). 

2. Disposal and recycling costs

Disposal costs start from around £20 from each retailer.

AO charges £10 to disconnect your old appliance, but most other retailers include this service in the installation cost of your new machine.

So AO's charge could add £10 to the total cost of your new freestanding appliance. But your total costs could potentially still be less than elsewhere, depending on what combination of services you need.  

Overall, it pays to be flexible about timings if you can. If you're not able to collect, install or disconnect your washing machine, there's not much you can do other than pay the additional fees, so keep that in mind and factor it in to your total budget.

3. Energy running costs

Another cost you need to consider is the amount of energy used to run your washing machine.
