How good are Aviva's car insurance policies?

Aviva's standard policy was a Best Buy in our policy analysis, with a score of 74%. It was one of the top 10 policies (out of 61 we examined).

Like most policies, cover is provided for personal possessions stolen or damaged in the car. But unlike many policies, Aviva's cover doesn't exclude mobile phones or laptops. The standard policy can also be bought with up to £120,000 personal accident cover. £5,000 comes as standard.

The policy wasn't perfect. While lost and stolen car keys are covered, damaged keys aren't. And if you have an early change of heart about the policy and choose to cancel within the cooling-off period, you'll be charged a fee of £43.

Defence against vehicle cloning

Aviva's policies provide legal expenses cover of £100,000, which pays for legal services to help you pursue compensation if a car accident wasn't your fault. Unlike most policies, Aviva's legal cover is also available for defence costs if you're prosecuted for a motor offence committed by someone who's cloned your licence plates.

Online, Zero and Premium

Aviva offers three policies that are only available through comparison sites: Online, Zero and Premium. These all had lower cover levels than the standard policy. The best-scoring was Aviva Premium, which scored 67% in our analysis ‒ slightly above average.

Its Online policy scored 64% ‒ an average score. Aviva Zero achieved 59%, placing it in the bottom third of our table.
