How we test ease of use

We test everything from how easy it is to set up the phone for the first time, to how straightforward it is to add contacts and send texts. Our trained ergonomic assessors also look for large, clearly-labelled and well-spaced keys - so you can avoid phones with cramped and fiddly buttons.

How we test call sound quality

For our call quality tests, we make calls both with and without background noise. We assess the clarity of the call, using both male and female assessors to judge how the phone handles pitch differences.

How we test battery life

We test battery life by charging the phone up to full capacity, and then measuring how long it lasts when making continuous calls. We also assess how long the phone holds its charge on standby, as we know that many people want a simple mobile phone to keep in a handbag or car in case of emergency. Simple mobile phones with the best battery last for at least 5 hours of calls and 18 days on standby.

We put extra features - such as a camera or basic internet connectivity - to the test, to see whether they're worth spending extra money on.
