How we test versatility

We check to see how many different types of surface the device can clean - those that can be used on hard floors, carpets and surfaces such as tiles and glass receive the highest rating.

How we test cleaning hard floors

When testing full-size steam cleaners we assess the time and effort it takes to shift dried-on pasta sauce and sticky drink stains from smooth and textured flooring.

How we test surface cleaning

We test cylinder, combination and handheld steam cleaners on three everyday surfaces to see how well they remove grime and dirt: tiles and grout (stained with soap, shower gel and shampoo), glass (coated with an oily film) and crevices (filled with tough everyday food soils). We also rate cylinder steam cleaners' ability to remove stains from carpets.

How we test surface dryness after cleaning

There are big differences in how damp steam cleaners leave surfaces after cleaning . We compare the performance of every model we test and give low marks to those that leave lots of water behind after use.

How we test durability

Our lab tests include several endurance assessments. As well as rating the build quality of each model, we test how repeated use affects the amount of steam they produce, as some can soon clog up with limescale.

How we test ease of use

We perform multiple assessments to ensure that steam cleaners are simple to operate. We weigh them to see how portable they are and check to see whether the cleaner is comfortable to operate. We check to ensure that they're easy to assemble, and that any accessories are painless to attach and remove. Finally, we note other essentials, such as how the steam is activated (whether it’s continuous steaming or requires you to use a trigger), whether the level of steam can be controlled and how noisy the cleaner is.
