Does Saga offer the best car insurance?

Here's how Saga scored in our latest survey:

  • 65% customer score, putting it joint 7th out of 27 insurers rated
  • 80% policy score on its standard policy – 2nd out of 28 providers we reviewed
  • 62% claims score, placing it joint 17th out of 25 providers we had claims scores for

How good are Saga's car insurance policies?

Saga's Select car insurance policy - in the middle of its range - was one of the most impressive policies we reviewed, ranking second out of 61 policies in our analysis.

We liked its vandalism promise - which means that if you're unfortunate enough that your car is vandalised, you won't feel the extra pain of losing no-claims discount if you claim.

Its policy also boasts one of the highest levels of personal accident cover - you can pick between £5,000 and £150,000. Additionally, unlike many policies, no-claims discount protection comes as standard.

On the downside, you're charged a £25 fee for renewing each year and it also has a reasonably steep £50 cancellation fee if you switch after the cooling off period.

Key claims

A 'key protect' feature comes as an enhancement with Saga's Select policy, and its more basic Standard policy - but as a standard part of its more comprehensive Plus policy. Your car's keys are covered in the event of loss or theft, as is the cost of replacing the locks (if it's likely the person who has stolen the keys knows where the car is).

This has a limit of £2,500 – including £250 for wear and tear – and claims made won't incur excesses or affect your policy's no-claims discount.

Without this feature, you can claim for loss and theft of your keys, but your policy's no-claims discount will take a hit. And wear and tear isn't covered.

Saga Plus and Saga Standard

Saga's most basic offering - 'Standard' - still received a very high 74% score in our analysis – one of the top 10 highest-scoring policies among the 61 we rated.

Meanwhile, its premium Plus policy held the number one spot in our analysis of cover – first out of 61 policies in our analysis, with a score of 84%.

The Plus policy comes with Saga's 'three-year fixed price' promise, which freezes your premium for three years unless you make a claim or your level of risk significantly changes.

Saga: FAQs

Why is Saga car insurance so expensive?

Car insurers offer 'personalised pricing': each customer pays a different premium depending on the insurer's interest in competing for their custom and its view of their level of risk. An insurer that's offering comparatively cheap quotes to one driver might be exorbitantly expensive for another. The only way to ensure you're getting the best possible deal is to shop around.

Can I renew my Saga insurance online?

Yes, you can renew your policy on Saga's website.
